Essential Reiki - The Complete Guide to Reiki Healing, Symbols and Attunements

Reiki is an ancient Tibetan art that directs the flow of energy around the body to heal, harmonize and create balance. It is a natural relaxation technique, allowing the body to heal itself on many different levels - including the mental, physical and emotional layers. This holistic approach is performed with a "laying on of hands" which redirects the body's energy.

Reiki was rediscovered and renamed by the Japanese Christian teacher, Mikao Usui; Rei meaning "higher power" and Ki meaning "life force energy." If your Ki is low, you are more likely to become sick. And if it is high, your mind and body exists in the optimum state to live a healthy, happy and fulfilling life.

The History

This natural, non-invasive healing system has been practiced for centuries in the East. It was only popularized in Western culture in the early 20th century, when Mikao Usui developed it as a spiritual practice. After three weeks of fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama in Japan, Usui said that by mystical revelation he had gained the knowledge and spiritual power to heal without energy depletion.

That year, Usui moved to Tokyo and founded the Usui Reiki Healing Society. He taught more than 2,000 students how to use the symbols involved in passing energy through the palms. He also performed many Reiki attunements, which opens us the student to more energy when they are ready to receive it.

How Does It Work?

essential reiki

In a typical healing session, your task is simply to lie down on a massage table and relax. The practitioner will enter a calm, meditative state and begin to place their hands over your body. They will work through the symbols, making between 12 and 20 hand positions over your body, lasting for 45-90 minutes.

During treatment, you may feel warmth or tingling in certain areas, plus a sense of deep relaxation and well being. Sometimes you may have an emotional release; this is all part of the healing process. You may seek regular treatment every few weeks, or learn how to do healing yourself and perform daily self-treatment.

How To Learn Reiki

The process of learning this ancient art is broken down into three degrees of knowledge:

  • The First Degree - teaches the basic theories and procedures. You will need one Reiki attunement from your master and with your first degree complete, you can start to heal yourself and others.

  • The Second Degree - teaches three symbols which enhance the strength and distance of the healing effect. A further attunement will increase your capacity for energy to flow through you, so you can perform distance healing.

  • The Third Degree - also known as Master training, comes in eight stages. It involves more final attunements as well as Master level symbols. The duration of Master training should last a year or more.
