Reiki Masters and our attunements

How long should we wait?

Mikao Usui Sensei, the founder of Reiki system, used to advise his students to wait two or more years between the attunements. This advice was a way of testing students ability of practicing Reiki, healing themselves and healing other people, and absorbing the ancient wisdom and Reiki energy. Most of Mikao Usui students only received the first attunements during their entire lifetime.

Waiting period between attunements

The waiting period between attunements may differ for different people depending on their age, their state of health, their personality, their interest in Reiki and their reactions to the previous attunements. Today, some reiki masters are less demanding and allow their students to receive the 2nd degree sooner than they should. The minimum recommend period between Reiki I and Reiki II levels is a couple of months and the minimum waiting period between Reiki II and Level III levels is at least one year. However, most of Reiki masters reduce the time to a 6-month period between Reiki I and Reiki II attunements.

What happens after the attunements?

After the first attunements, students must practice on a daily basis the hands-positions and self-healing in order to purify themselves for receiving the Reiki II attunements. Students should be healed of any disease when they receive the Reiki II attunements, otherwise they may have a problem to use their healing powers to treat other people or do their aura reading. Of course, they can receive Reiki I and II attunements on shorter intervals, but they must be prepared for this by purifying themselves.

How to prepare for a reiki attunement?

Prepare yourself for Reiki Attunements by avoiding alcohol, caffeine, sweets, cigarettes and eating meat. The days before the attunement, try to eat only organic fruits and vegetables. Stop reading the newspaper, stop watching TV and listening to the Radio a few days before the attunement. Go out for walks in nature. Spend some time alone, meditating daily during all the week prior to the attunements. It is very important to purify yourself before the attunements.

Reiki attunements body reactions

It is also good to observe your body reactions after the Reiki I attunements. In some rare cases, after the Reiki I attunements, students have experienced natural purifying body reactions such as diarrhea or vomiting. If this happens to you, don't worry, it's a normal reaction of your body that is trying to purify itself and eliminate all the blockages in order to reach an expanded awareness and allow the natural flow of energy. But if your symptoms are severe, talk to your Reiki Masters and tell them about your problems. They will know how to make you feel better. However, for the Reiki II Attunements it would be recommendable to purify yourself, to practice daily the auto-healing basic hands positions and to wait until you feel ready. Some students might also have had previous contact with other healing techniques, like acupuncture or bio-energy, so they may be ready to receive Reiki I and Reiki II attunements at shorter intervals and progress faster even to the Master level. But the best answer to how long you should wait between attunements is to take as much time as you need until you feel ready.
